Well time flies. I just noted I have been following the Spirit Guide series since August of 2010, when EJ Stevens sent me her first novel to review... The cover grabbed me immediately, the quote below is from my 5*****Star Amazon review and the rest is history.I have just come upon an enchanting new Paranormal Mystery Story written by Dark Poetess , EJ Stevens. She Smells the Dead is just what the Moms and Librarians have been looking for. A New Series of YA books with enchantment, mystery, love and commitment.
Yuki is a High School Senior with a unique psychic awareness. SHE SMELLS THE DEAD. Actually, they come in the form of "smell impressions" according to Calvin Miller, her Alpha male soul mate. Both Yuki and Calvin have totems who guide them in their lives. Yuki has a special calling, which is to lead lost souls to the light.
Through this book, readers from all walks of life have lived vicariously through the teen years with Yuki in Spirit Storm, Legends of Witchtrot Rd, Brush With Death and now the last of the series The Pirate Curse. A teenager in high school, called names, shunned, and finally bullied by most of the cool crowd for being different in her quirky clothing choices and her Goth dress. We have watched this young lady grow, through the pen of this author, not to buckle and be the underdog, but to gather up her strength and roar!
It is now the summer after graduation. The gang will be splitting up to go in different directions. It is Yuki and Calvin who will remain; Yuki opening an artist shop in town and Cal remaining as his pack Alpha. Through all of these stories her best friend Emma and her new boyfriend Simon (Cal's Lieutenant) are always there to work their magic and buy pizza. Emma is going off to school to be a Vet while separated from Simon who also remains behind.
Three couples all BFF's are spending a week at a beach cottage together. It is here the final ghosts descend as Yuki, arriving early, grabs some pads and pencils and finds a quiet spot to sketch, as her new shop still needs some more canvasses for the upcoming Grand Opening.
Yuki falls asleep in the shade and awakens to find the tide has come in and she has no access to leaving the spot before the tides go down. Getting up on a bit of higher ground, a new odor assails her and she realizes she is not alone. She sees the filmy shadows of a few unsavory characters and then there is another clearer spectre of a very handsome man with long black hair, a gold earring, dressed like a pirate? I had the thought while reading it of Pirates of the Caribbean and a Johnny Depp like character was who Ms Stevens was describing. We learn that he has lost something and it would be Yuki's job to help him find his treasure. Could it be gold and jewels or the treasure of the heart?
Ms Stevens, you have done the writing community a great service writing a story like this. My granddaughter is just 10 and has been reading Yuki since she is 8 ½. I want her to see it is okay to be different. I want her to see bullying is wrong. I want her to know that if it happens to her, to let someone know. You have given us a wonderful role model and I thank you.

My Thoughts And so it ends. Yes, this is the final book in the Spirit Guide series, and I'm sad that it's over; I think there could easily have been a few more books in this series, but I was satisfied with how it ended.
There is, as always, plenty of humor in this. One quote I highlighted is two paragraphs long, so too much for a review, but this one should be okay "If wishes were flying monkeys, we'd all be wearing tiny hats."
This was an ARC, so it wasn't the final version. Hopefully that means the multiple cases of "you're" being used instead of the correct, possessive "your" will be fixed in the final version that was scheduled for release on October 8, but which has been made available early in e-book and paperback formats.
This whole series is one that any fan of YA fantasy should love, so if that describes you and you still haven't read any of these books, then this is a great time to grab and read the whole series.

Synopsis When Yuki starts smelling salt brine and seaweed, she finds her summer vacation hijacked by pirates... the DEAD kind.
Will the ghost of Black Sam Bellamy, Prince of Pirates, lead Yuki and her friends to treasure or terror?
All good things must come to an end, thus Ms. Stevens brings us the last story in her Spirit Guide series, but not without one more good mystery for Yuki and the gang to solve.
School is over, and the gang is all moving on to the next chapter in their lives. Some are off to college, Yuki is getting ready to open her art booth and Cal is busy as the alpha of his pack. When Emma tells Yuki that their friend Gordy has his family's beach house for the week and all are invited, Yuki is less than pleased, she and sand, sun and sea are not the best of friends. Yuki agrees to go, Cal and Simon are busy at the Wolf camp with the full moon so won't be joining them for a few days so Yuki and Emma make the trip.
It doesn't take long before Yuki takes off on her own to paint. When she starts smelling brine, seaweed and rum she knows she is not alone. After a knock on the head, Yuki's abilities to smell the dead have become enhanced and now she can also see them...oh will the fun never end? She soon learns her newest visitors are the pirate Black Sam Bellamy, Prince of Pirates and some of his faithful crew. Yuki and the gang will have to try to find Sam's treasure so he can rest, return the amulet Yuki "borrowed" from the witches in Salem and put up with Cal's newest wolf charge, a sexy, snarly teenage girl named London. Never a dull moment.
I loved this series from the first book. Ms. Stevens decided to not go the normal route and have Yuki see dead people but smell dead people. She added to the slightly off center theme by making Yuki's spirit guide a giant dung beetle, her best friend is a vegan studying to be a veterinarian, her boyfriend the hunky alpha of the local wolf pack and his lieutenant is a slightly older, very aggravating Englishman named Simon. Yuki and her three friends manage to get themselves into and out of more scrapes than Scooby Doo and gang, solving mysteries with loads of one liners, a little danger and a lasting friendship that nothing can dampen.
This time around, we get to hunt for pirate treasure, learn more about Yuki's abilities from the witches, and watch Yuki deal with Cal's young charge. What a wonderful way for Ms. Stevens to wrap up this series, Black Sam was very sad and mysterious and his gang of four smelly crew members follow Yuki around; even riding on the top of the car like it was a coach. The gang was in top form, each bringing their own little quirks to the table but all giving their all to help Yuki.
It was bittersweet reading this story, knowing it was going to be the last and trying to savor every last bit of it, yet unable to put the book down because it was just so much fun to hunt for pirate treasure. I will miss these young people; I've come to think of them as my own kids but like your own kids, they grow up and go on with their life. We must let them go, no matter how hard we want to hold on, so we smile through our tears and wish them well.
