Omg. Omg. & ommfg is the 1st words that came to my mind once i finished this book. Through the whole book i couldnt wait 2 get 2 the next part. It was that good, Endy really out did herself on this 1. I didnt think the ending would turn out the way it did. Once u read the prologue u will feel like u already know which son commited that crime. But u will be so wrong. I feel like i dont have 2 give a synopsis bcuz the 1 they give, pretty much explain what its about. But it had so many twists & turns & @ times you just felt like yelling @ their mother nina 2get a grip on herself. This goes on my list as 1 of the best urban fiction novels of all time. It held your interest, made you laugh, cry, & say Allah (God) why. But in the end everybody got what they deserved. It also shows that majority of the time u cant escape your fate. & that your destiny will always be the same if you dont alter your life desions. Bcuz how you treat ppl in life, will always determine how u will get treated in return. & thats real talk ppl. So i recommend this book 2 any1 who want 2 feel their heart & mind go on a rollecoaster ride, with sweet revenge & pay back in the end.

A DEAL WITH DEATH tells the story of two teenage boys Malik and Marquis and their mother Nina and her addiction to drugs. Malik the oldest drops out of school and starts dealing the same drug that his mother is addicted to. Marquis is just entering college with dreams of a better life. When Malik makes a deal with "Death" aka Todd McClain, soon after there is an all out drug war and Malik may just get caught up in the mix.

This book has it all corrupt cops, drugs, murder etc. Endy did a remarkable job in portraying both sides of the of the effects drugs play on the user and the family--as far as what it is to be children with a mother that is addicted to drugs, the emotions were raw and really shows the stand point of what the family goes through and the decisions that ultimately may come, due to being a child of this environment. Also, she shows the side of the struggle of someone that is addicted to drugs and the day to day life of a user of drugs.

I thought Endy's other two books IN MY HOOD I & II were great but it just seems like with each book she gets better and better. This is one author you don't want to sleep on.

Malik's younger brother Marquis has just graduated from high school and is on his way to college, but his older brother's street dealings start to interfere with his own life. Marquis is also determined to make sure Nina gets clean once and for all.

A Deal With Death is a gritty page-turner by Endy. Endy gives you a realistic look into how the drug game impacts the life of a mother and her sons. You see how much denial Nina is in when she gets further and further into her addiction. Readers will also see how Malik and Marquis deal with Nina in very different ways. The main focus of this novel was about the damaging effects of drugs, but there was so much more. There was a good dose of family drama between Nina, her children, and their imprisoned father Wiz. This also added the right amount of realism to this novel. This story wouldn't be complete without some jaw-dropping twists and backstabbing that will keep your attention to the very end. A Deal With Death is a thought-provoking novel that will be a sure delight for readers.
So I was loaned this book because I was told it was a great read, and not having read many African American urban fiction novels, I didn't really know what to expect going into this. I can say after reading the prologue, my interest was piqued. But, with t gay said, I think my lack of experience with AA-urban fiction books may have affected my enjoyment of Deal with Death. Maybe outs because I don't talk like the characters do, or I'm not around people who talk like they do, but I couldn't really get into the flow of the story. The dialogue just didn't seem authentic; again, that could just be due to me not reading enough of this genre.

One thing I did enjoy however, was the character, Death, or at least the concept for the character. I love a good psychopath. But there has to be a reason behind the psychopathy. I don't like crazy for crazy's sake. I mean growing up in a family steeped in the drug game doesn't automatically mean you'll be crazy, and I never really learned why Death was so enamoured with... well, death.

An area this book was definitely lacking was the lackluster character descriptions. They could have been done much better than merely listing off character features. Also, a lot of the character's motivations didn't ring true to me. I don't know, maybe I don't know enough about how relationships work, but I would think that after seeing some of the things these characters see, same experiencing the things they experience, one would think their reactions would be much different. Suspension of disbelief, I know, but that can only go so far.

I don't want to just bash this book, because it wasn't all bad. It just wasn't my cup of tea is all. The plot was fairly easy to follow, and the characters were okay, if not mostly one-note. Also, the depiction of what addicts were like was a stark one and harrowing one. It left a sour taste in my mouth for the most part, and I'm thinking Endy wanted it that way. The drug game isn't for everyone and neither are drugs; this book makes that clear if nothing else. I can't say I was on the edge of my seat while reading this, and if it was part of a series I probably wouldn't continue it. Just didn't grip me enough.
