I love regency romances! I've read several of this author's books and liked most of them. This book was ok. The premise - war veteran and amputee comes to the rescue of his childhood friend by pretending to be her fiancé - was mildly intriguing. The heroine, Miss Daphne Vaughan, was a bit too self-righteously charitable for me. The hero, Major Bartholomew Blackpool, was a bit too self-pitying for me. They didn't have much chemistry. The storyline was simple and predictable. I usually enjoy the author's writing style, but this book was 2-3 pages of innermost thoughts for every 1 page of action and dialogue. Overall, not a bad book, but not a favorite either.

I can only take so much "my projects are so important and all I can think about" and "half of my leg is missing so I'm worth nothing" . Get over yourselves!!! I'm not sure I can even finish this. I've enjoyed the series up to this point but these two are driving me crazy.
Prior to the wars on the continent Major Bartholomew Blackpool was the toast of the ton Handsome to a fault, charismatic, popular, skilled at horsemanship, boxing, dancing, and a notorious rogue with the ladies. He returns home a shattered shell of a man with one of his legs shot off and thinking he will never be able to do any of his former activities, especially being the consummate lover of ladies. Childhood friend Miss Daphne Vaughn is being forced into a marriage by her heavy-handed guardian, to the point of threatening her with Bedlam or Debtor's prison. The major comes to her rescue to enter into a fake betrothal until she can reach her majority age and gather up her meager inheritance. Neither adamantly wants marriage and they begin a risky dance to see who will "cry off" first. If Miss Vaughn breaks the engagement she will be deemed ruined by society and if the major cries off he will probably never again find a bride. Can Daphne draw out what was once the darling of the ton and can the major see beyond Daphne's crusades to help the poor and downtrodden? This is the reviewer's 4th installment in the author's Dukes of War collection and her writing style has utterly captivated this reader's attention. It is inevitable that this reader/reviewer will read ALL of the rest in this series. Can a person with a disability find love and self-acceptance once again? Read this captivating regency romance and get drawn into the lives of those living it out!
A good, interesting idea for a plot, developed so poorly, that I cannot give it more than a lukewarm "it was OK" three star rating. Usually I reward with an extra star all the books that are a "stand alone" titles. But I cannot make this one a four star book. It was stretched, boring, historically unrealistic, just no. Heroes were flat, at times stupid. Not very likable. I found myself flipping pages to get to the finish line. I will give this author another chance, I have another book of her downloaded on a free promotion, but if it isn't any better, that's it for me. Even for "free" books I need to pay with my time. And this book wasn't worth it.
The premise was great, right up my alley since I love historicals with some angst and a flawed hero. Although at times he could be self-indulgent and obtuse, he didn't disappoint. The heroine however... good heavens, she was annoying. Her whole gig is that she write letters in support of various nebulous causes. That's it. she writes letters. She doesn't go anywhere or do anything, she writes letters. And she's so dang self-righteous about it! Later in the book the hero does more for her causes in a few actions than all her sacrificial letter-writing does in the whole book. Her character does grow a bit during the story, but not enough to get to the point I rooted for her. There was rarely a point I didn't want to slap her silly. Other books in the series may be better choices because the writing was good.
The Major's Faux Fiancée is a lot of repetitive claptrap until pages 228-230 when Daphne's character becomes real and dimensional. Prior to that it's a lot of handwringing on her part as to how everyone leaves her and her life will only have meaning if she can make a difference to an array of 'causes.' The wearying repetition for Bartholomew is how he is a 'half man' because he lost his leg in the Napoleonic wars and how he doesn't deserve happiness because he couldn't save his twin brother. Don't get me wrong, I like my stories with a bit of angst but this was to a large degree, a veritable cesspool of whining self-indulgence.

Bottom line Until the pages noted above and the scene where Bartholomew scales a balcony to win Daphne, this barely rise to
The 2 star level. Because I finished it and because of those two scenes it rises to a 3 star level.
I'm glad this was a free book because if I paid for it i would have been extremely upset. I only read half the book and just couldn't finish it. The two main characters area but disappointment. He was all I'm not a man because I lost part of my leg. As if being a man meant you had to have a whole body!!! She was all Nobody loves me and I can not do anything else except saved the poor, as if a women can only handle one thing at a time. Both characters were weak self absorbed immature people. I just couldn't finish this book.
I couldn't tolerate either one of them, especially her. She was so selfish. He was injured & disfigured & full of himself. I had checked the reviews before I got this & no one had mentioned the 2 sex scenes near the end. And she, being a good Christian girl, gave up her purity knowing it would probably be a one night stand, but she didn't care. Can't writers write books anymore without sex???
